Win Big And Have Fun At Matchbook: The Top Online Casino Site In India – I’m not a match collector, but if I were a philumenist, I’d definitely collect feature matches. When it comes to little scraps of promotional ephemera, this clever and colorful matching book with photos of real matches is second to none!
In this wacky world we live in, it’s nearly impossible to walk through a flea market without finding a few vintage matching books for sale, and they’re usually reasonably priced, often a dollar or less. Always interested in any kind of advertising, I usually check out the matchbook. However, it wasn’t until three years ago that my eyes were really opened to a specific type of matching book, feature matching.

In the United States, «Features» is a trademarked name for a matchbox consisting of broad matches printed with letters and/or designs. The trademark is by the Lion Match Company of Chicago, Illinois, and in fact, every feature match book I’ve seen has that company’s name on it.

According to my research, feature matching was introduced in September 1930. Although I haven’t seen any concrete confirmation of my theory, I suspect that the first aspect matched book is oversized. For example, this giant feature match book for GE has several patent dates printed on the back of the match lines. The earliest is 1,733,258, which relates to a patent issued in 1929. Its last patent was 1,839,846, issued in early 1932. A matching book measures approximately 3 ¼ by 4 ½.
Here is another great giant feature book actually dated June 18, 1936. It promoted a fight between Joe Louis and Max Schmeling, which was broadcast on NBC radio and sponsored by Buick. Above a line of matches depicting a man peering through a knotted hole in a fence, «Ladies and Gentlemen – The Winna!» What he saw behind the fence was a 1936 Buick. This is a great example of a crossover collection. It appeals to collectors of sports memorabilia, radio memorabilia, automotive memorabilia and, yes, matching books. As you can imagine, this is worth more than the average feature compatibility book, most of which cost between $5 and $20.
As for the history of the matchbox, most sources credit Philadelphia lawyer Joshua Pusey with patenting the matchbox in 1892. The Diamond Match Company purchased the patent in 1894. The concept of using matches as a promotional tool was a bit late. Then, in 1902, a salesman for the Diamond Match Company, H.C. Trade received an order for 10 million matches from Pabst Brewing Company. It is considered to be the first large-scale series.
The 1930s, 40s and 50s are considered the golden age of match covers. Making billions and promoting everything. Lion Match Company’s timing is consistent with its feature matching.

In the late 1930s or early 1940s, Siri’s matches became smaller in size. This «Winning With Wendell Willkie» is a very desirable matchbook because in addition to feature matches featuring the average American, it is a «display» matchbook with Willkie’s photo «pop-out» on the inside cover. It is the size of a standard fit book.
The Leopold Morse matching book is slightly larger (2 inches wide instead of 1 ½). It is also a feature visual book with high patriotic sentiment. Obviously Leopold Morse was a congressman, but, more importantly, he sold men’s clothing.
Beyond this, the matching book will explain itself. Obviously, with feature matching, the key is to find the «whole book». While the average match collector will often remove the matches and display the match flat, the feature match collector wants each match to be in good condition. Some matching books, such as Manners Big Boy and the 1955 Pontiac, are not straight but have side extensions. This is a contour feature fit, and is highly desirable.

A Michigan author of romantic suspense novels won first place in the San Diego Library Store’s third annual Matchbook story contest.
Kate Fellows’ entry, one of 301 submissions, impressed the judges with her clever spin on the classic «Whodunnit» mystery. This is:

Who stole my youth? The detective I hired brought out the truth. «They’re in it together,» he said, handing me a picture. Father Time showed no remorse, his face was kind and gentle. Mother Nature is unrepentant. «Honestly, dear,» he asked, «what did you expect?»
The contest requires entries on a matchbox card, which has room for about 40 words (if they are typed using a 7-point font). Library store officials drew inspiration for the contest from the legendary Ernest Hemingway, who was once challenged to create a story in six words and wrote: «For sale: baby shoes, never worn.»
To win, partners receive a $50 gift card to the nonprofit’s library store (located on the ground floor of downtown Central Library), 50 matchsticks with the winner’s entry printed, publication in the library’s e-newsletter, and a temporary exhibit. The library’s Hervey Family Rare Book Room centers on a collection of the company’s pamphlets.
On her website, Fellows writes, «It was a wonderful challenge to write a story in fifty words or less, fit into a matching book cover. A fun and creative idea.»

Second place in the competition went to Chris Corey: The bus was empty, like a life preserver tucked into my parka pocket. We saved the raspberry for last. «Great taste,» I insisted; He likes their color. A roadside heather splashed in the blur of drifting snow. Sometimes when we kiss, a small, purple, lost crescent moon lands on our tongue.
